Zero P Zero Worries
If you purchase lawn fertilizer this season, remember to choose one that has "0" as the middle number.
The community of the City of Belleville has been specially selected to participate in a Community-Based Social Marketing (CBSM) program to reduce the use of phosphorus-based lawn fertilizers in order to help reduce the negative impacts of excess phophorus on Bay of Quinte water, wildlife, and habitat qualities. Phosphorus-based lawn fertilizers are frequently overused and contribute to excess algae growth in the Bay of Quinte. These algal blooms can cause a variety of adverse impacts including fouling of beaches, taste and odour issues in drinking water, restrictions on water use due to algal toxins, and impacts to Bay of Quinte fish due to oxygen depletion when the blooms breakdown and decay.
